Internships pt.2

It has been some time since I have written a blog, and I am writing this entry very late, but my mind is being creative right now. The past month or so I have really been striving to update my resume and start applying for internships.

Having an internship is a great way to network, but also a way to gain experience in your desired field of choice. I am currently seeking internships for public relations or any type of communications. I have always been good at speaking and I am willing to put my best foot forward and start the job process for my future.

Recently, I have applied for over eleven internships at Southwest Airlines. Why Southwest you may ask? Well I have always been a very outgoing person and I actually know three people who work with this company and they have nothing but good things to say. This is exactly something I want to be a part of when I think about where I might be in the next couple years after I graduate college.

That is not all that Southwest offers. After speaking and reading up on some advantages to working with this airline company, one of the great added benefits on top of working with them is receiving flight benefits. This is something I would take full advantage of. One of the many things I like to do in my free time is travel. To be able to travel to so many different places and potentially travel for work, is a dream of mine.

Building a future for myself is so important, but what takes precedence over this, is finding a career that I will love. I could definitely see myself loving Southwest.

I took this picture in Cabo this past summer. One of my many adventures traveling with my family.

Miss Illinois County Fair

I cannot believe it has already been one year since I competed at the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen pageant. It seems like yesterday that I was getting fitted for my dress, practicing my speech, and walking across the state stage with 71 other beautiful contestants from counties all over Illinois.

Since I passed down my crown this past year, it is now time for the new Miss Henry County Fair to represent our county with grace and poise. I know she is going to a great job. As soon as winter break hits it is all preparation for the state competition. She will be practicing her walk in her dress, practicing her speech every chance she gets, and doing four minute mock interviews with the pageant crew.

This may seem like a lot of work but it is truly worth every second of it. The people you meet and the experience you gain is what is most important going through this journey. The people you spend all of your time with become like a second family to you, and the experience is something you can take with you forever.

Even though my time as queen came to an end I will forever be able to say that I made a difference in so many ways for the people of Henry County. The Henry County Fair is home and I am so happy that it brought so many loving people and opportunities into my life.

‘Tis The Season

Awaiting the first snow fall is like waiting for santa to deliver his presents on Christmas Eve. For us fellow southern “Illinoisan’s” the wait might be over this Sunday. That is when the said light and fluffy white stuff will be hitting Edwardsville.

This is very important to me because I am from the midwest and winter means snow. Christmas means snow. Take it from Mr. Berlin himself in his hit song White Christmas. This song and like many others give the beloved Christmas a “snowy white feel”. I am all about the holiday season and love traveling to see the beautiful christmas lights all over the St. Louis area. The ones I recommend  for everyone are the lights at the St. Louis Zoo.

These lights attract tourists and people from the St. Louis area every year. I am not originally from this area, but these lights are ones that I never want to miss. So however you may spend your holiday season make sure you are drinking lots of hot chocolate, visiting spectacular places to view the many christmas lights, listen to your favorite christmas album on repeat, and make the most of this wonderful hopefully snowy time of year.

I received this picture off of the St. Louis Zoo’s website. This is just a small representation of what you can see this year.

Preparation or Break?

I have finally arrived. I am officially home for Thanksgiving break. This is a huge relief and I am so happy to be visiting my family. Thanksgiving is a nice break because then immediately after all of the yummy festivities it is back on for school. Meaning there is so much work to be done before Christmas break can arrive. In order to enjoy my Christmas break I have to survive these steps in the weeks right after Thanksgiving:

  1. Write.
  2. Present.
  3. Study.
  4. Study.
  5. Study.
  6. Work.
  7. Eat.

All of these steps are essential in order to finish my first semester of junior year strong. Getting past finals can be difficult, but if you really push forward in the upcoming weeks it will be a breeze. Then you can think of all the amazing things to do while on break. This Thanksgiving break I am able to spend countless hours watching Christmas movies…already, eating as much as my stomach can hold, and making sure that my family enjoys my company as I am back. This is also the time where we start decorating my house for Christmas. I CAN’T WAIT!

Even though the preparation after break is going to be difficult I can relax and enjoy my family’s company now, and then I can get down to working hard on my studies.

I found this image on the Tiffany Ridge Elementary School Website. I thought it was the perfect fit for my blog this week.

When is the right time to put up your Christmas tree?

Today I was able to make my very own purchase of my first Christmas tree. This is a big deal because I have always just had one tree. That was a tree at my parents house. Things changed this year when I moved into a my very own home.

I decided it was time to decorate for Christmas. I figured this would be the perfect time since at home I normally helped put up the tree the day after Thanksgiving. It was hard to come to the conclusion though of when would be the best time to put up the beloved tree. This is because I did not want to put it up to early where people still had pumpkins sitting on their porch, but I also did not want to wait until after Thanksgiving break, because then my house would look very “un-christmasy”.

Picking the right tree was another issue on hand. This is a bigger deal than you think people. I have always had a real christmas tree my whole life, and this year I had to settle for a pre lit tree from Walmart. This decision was not taken lightly, but it was a no brainer. I would be going home for most of Thanksgiving and Christmas break, so who would be home to water my perfectly living tree? Most likely no one, so this was the best option. Even though it saddened me not to get the real tree I am happy with my purchase and cannot wait for the holidays.

Picking out the best tree and knowing when to put it up is not the only thing to look forward to this holiday season.

My dad took this picture of my brother and I picking out our Christmas tree last year.

Becoming an Adult

Going to college is proof enough that you are an adult right? Well I have recently read many different websites and posts about how you are not an adult until you start making your own appointments for things.

I am guilty of still having my mom call and make all of my doctor’s, hair, dentist, etc. appointments because I have this phobia of talking to people on the phone. I have grown up so used to her being the one just to tell me when and where I had to be. It is hard for me to understand that now that I am not living under her roof it is my responsibility to take these “scary” phone calls into my own hands, unless they have and online scheduling system.

Having an online scheduling system has been a life saver for me. I do not know why I am so intimidated by the unknown person on the other end of the phone, but thanks to technology and the help of Schedulicity and SIUE’s Cougar Care I am now able to hold off on “adulting” for a little while longer.

This is a good thing because I don’t think I am ready to fully let go of all the wonderful things my mother does for me. I love you mom.

Why Cubs Fans are the Best Fans

As many of you may know the Chicago Cubs have made it to the World Series. This is the first time the Cubs have made it to this game since 1945. This also makes their fans one of the best groups out there. This is because they have managed to stick by there side through it all.

The Chicago Cubs are currently in the fifth game of the world series tonight. They are holding on. If they win tonight they are only trailing the Indians by one win. This means there can still be hope for them. The fans are very hopeful. In a video I saw online it showed the Chicago Cubs fans singing the cubs anthem, but this was an air view 3 miles away. This is an awesome thing to have on video because it proves the fans are there through it all, and they want everyone to know who their team is.

Another reason why the Cubs fans are the best fans is because they have continued to show there support after all of these years. This shows true dedication and passion for a team so many gather to watch all over Illinois. I am lucky enough to be one of these fans, and I am proud to say that I will continue to show my support for an amazing team.

Carving Pumpkins

Designing the perfect pumpkin takes a lot of time and effort. You have to pick out the perfect pumpkin, find the design that works best, gather the utensils, and start carving. And it is an absolute must to either have the perfect Halloween movie playing or your favorite Halloween playlist going on in the background.

Finding the perfect pumpkin is number one on the list. This can be done by going to any of your local pumpkin patches. I found my pumpkin at Eckerts. I chose to pick my pumpkin here because it is a family friendly environment and I was able to bring my Grandma and Mom along as well.

The next step after picking out your pumpkin is starting the design process. This step is very tedious. There are so many designs and templates to choose from. You need to make the decision if your pumpkin is going to be spooky or cute. After deciding on a template it is time to start carving.

Once the carving begins it is time to be precise.Using different utensils to get the perfect angle and rounded shape is very important. It is also important to make sure you do not cut the wrong part, or cut out something that is supposed to stay there. If that does happen do not be afraid to use a toothpick to stick a piece back on.

Carving pumpkins is an american past time and it should remain that way. I have made so many great memories and I will let this stay a family tradition. It is something that everyone should consider doing to spook up their Halloween decorations.

I took this picture on Snapchat of my finished product of this years Pumpkin.

All things Fall

It is that time of year again where everything is all about pumpkin spice lattes, oversized sweaters, that cute pair of booties you just bought with your paycheck, pumpkin carving, and piles and piles of leaves.

Fall is the best time of the year. My favorite time to be exact. I love the smells of every fall candle in Yankee, I love the smell of the neighbor burning the pile of leaves next door. I also love the idea of the weather changing that means new clothes.

If you are anything like me then changing the way we dress is the best part about fall. Comfy oversized sweaters, the perfect shade of blue jeans, with the perfect brown or black bootie. This outfit can be used for any fall event that you attend like a friends bonfire, or a trip to a spooky haunted house with your boyfriend or girlfriend. What’s not to love about that?

This fall I have conquered a lot of my favorites. I can’t wait to carve my first pumpkin of the year, spend time with my family at our local apple orchard, and bake the best pumpkin pie with my Grandma Colleen. If I can tell you anything about fall that actually matters that is spend it with the ones you love, and make the most out of what you are given.

Being the daughter of a Police Officer

In the recent months the light of our beloved police officers has fallen dark. The media has turned our day to day hero’s into hateful beings. To me none of this matters. I grew up with a man who has provided for me, taught me right from wrong, been there for me through thick and thin, and has always supported me in what I do.

This man is my father. A father who has been a police officer my whole life. A father who has done so many amazing things. A father who has put his life at risk for others safety.  A father who has loved his family unconditionally. A father I am proud to look up to. My dad is an amazing man, and an even more amazing policeman.

I know many people have their opinions about police officers, and how some may have given the police officer name a bad reputation. Let me tell you my dad is not that guy. He is the one that makes a difference. He loves what he does and I look up to him for being so passionate about it. Being his daughter has taught me so many things.

I have learned that I do need to pray for his safety every time he is out on the job. I have learned how to want something and work really hard to achieve it. I have learned to stay strong. The most important thing he has taught me is to put my family above everything because they are the ones who will always be there for you.

You are my hero and my favorite police officer. I love you Dad. Thank you for everything you have done for me.
